What's Good For Edema?

Edema, also known as dropsy, is the swelling of body parts, caused by fluid trapped in the body's tissues under the skin. Edema can affect any part of the body (or even the whole body), however, it's usually occurs in the ankles, legs, feet, hands, and arms. Symptoms that suggest you might have edema include: the skin over the swollen area appears stretched and shiny; pressing against the swollen area with your finger for 10 to 15 seconds will leave a dimple in the skin.
Edema has many causes and contributions,such as: consuming too much salt; standing or walking for long periods of time; pregnancy; some medications; problems with lymph nodes; weakened valves of the veins in the legs (venous insufficiency); varicose veins; and medical conditions such as- congestive heart failure, and liver, kidney, lung, and thyroid diseases. Genetics may also increase the risk of edema.
Some vitamins, herbs, or other healing foods, may be helpful for edema. Herbs, and other healing foods, which may be beneficial when taken internally, include: Alfalfa, Allspice, Anise, Burdock, Corn Silk, Cucumber, Dandelion root, Garlic, Horseradish, Shavegrass, Juniper berries, Kelp, Marshmallow, Parsley, Pau D’ Arco, Pineapple, Squash, Tea, and Yarrow. Supplements which may be helpful, include: B Complex, B6 (pyrodoxine), C, Calcium & Magnesium, E, Potassium, Protein supplement, and Silicon.
Good lifestyle choices, which may be beneficial, include the following: consuming a high-fiber diet; getting moderate exercise; drinking 8-12 cups of water daily; and drinking herbal teas (esp. diuretics). Also, be sure to avoid or limit the following: alcohol, dairy, meat, monosodium glutamate, salt, sugar, and white flour.
